So here is a photo of icecream (my wife made it) I'm including as much details on the process as I can, I will include a progression video on the comments. Equipment: Canon 5d Mark III with a 100mm 2.8 macro at 1/100s, F9, Iso 320, two yongnuo 580's, four yongnuo 603c's transceivers, one octa box and a diffuse cloth Here is the process I followed: 1- I decided to setup the camera and the ice cream first, we have a wooden table in our living room that has a great color so that was the main background, for the actual ice cream we decided to use a red vase to contrast with the table, I used an empty vase identical to the one the ice cream is in, ice cream melts fast! so I didn't want to waste it on placing so one vase was cooling while the other was posing. 2 - due to the space I tilted the camera to get a vertical view of the table, that way nothing else is in the way, I connected a USB cable to tether it to my laptop via lightroom and setup a 603c with a cable release to the camera to release the shutter, I didn't want to shake the camera or move it since that would affect the foucus. 3 - Setting up the lights was interesting, I started with the main octabox I wanted a strong light coming from the left, the sun was coming down so I used it as a fill light, finally to separate the ice cream from the dark shadows on the dark wooden table I added a flash on the back, kind of like a hair light, and it was to sharp so I added a diffuse cloth on top of it and that made the trick. 4 - with the lights setup we started to place some "props" around it (my wife helped and she was really excited) first we tried with some rice crispies on the back, that didn't work... so I asked my wife about the ice cream and she said that is normally prepared with cookies and blueberries, we added the cookies to the shot, that didn't work either so then we tried with the blueberries, tried to do a bit of a mess and it work perfectly! 5 - everything was starting to take shape so we added some more props first a tea spoon because if you are going to eat the ice cream you gotta have something to eat it with right? it was too shiny so I added some blue berries on top of it to remove some of the attention from it, the background was also looking a bit empty my wife had some colorful bracelets that had the right colors so we threw them in there and finally added the recipe book that she is using at the far end, everything was looking lovely but the ice cream was missing something, then my wife grabbed a basil leaf put it on top and there it was! 6 - after I had the image in camera as I wanted I did the final retouching in lightroom, adjusted the white balance for a warm color because I think food looks better that way, removed some of the contrast in the back, added a vignette and added some saturation to the vase, the basil and the blueberries in the ice cream, the whole idea was to trap the attention right in the ice cream and let the rest of the props blend in. Then again, when dealing with Ice cream you have to be fast or you have to have a lot, so prepare ahead of time! lesson learned: I had to manually adjust the flashes multiple times to get the exact exposure I wanted, I didn't change my camera settings so I had to move a lot around the room... next time I will try setting up the lights and adjust the camera settings to control the image.
Creatures of Nantes "Les Machines de l'île"
This is one of the many creatures located in "Les Machines de l'île" a fantastic place to explore a totally unprecedented artistic project. Born from the François Delarozière and Pierre Orefice’s imagination, it is at crossroads of Jules Verne’s "invented worlds", of the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci, and of Nantes’ industrial history, on the exceptional site of the former shipyards.
